Understanding your area
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can enter buildings from the ground. Some parts of Ireland have a higher likelihood of elevated indoor radon levels than others.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) publishes a radon risk map showing the estimated likelihood of homes exceeding the national reference level. The map is a useful guide, but it cannot replace a radon test.
The EPA identifies High Radon Areas as places where more than 10% of homes are predicted to have radon levels above the national reference level of 200 Bq/m³.
Radon levels vary throughout Ireland. Properties outside designated High Radon Areas can still have elevated radon concentrations.
A risk map cannot tell you the radon concentration inside a particular building. Testing is the only way to establish your property's radon level.

The official EPA map provides area-based radon risk information for locations throughout Ireland.

Responsibilities and guidance
Ireland's national radon reference level for homes is 200 Bq/m³. The EPA recommends testing homes for radon and taking action where levels exceed this value.
For existing private homes, radon testing is generally recommended rather than a universal legal requirement. Separate building regulations may apply to radon protection measures in new construction.
Find Out About Home Testing →Ireland's workplace radon reference level is 300 Bq/m³. Employers have legal duties concerning radon risk assessment and testing in circumstances covered by radiation protection legislation.
Requirements depend on factors including the workplace location, type of premises and whether elevated radon exposure is likely. Employers should consult current EPA guidance to establish their obligations.
EPA Radon Guidance ↗Use the official EPA map to understand the predicted radon risk where your property is located.
Arrange a radon test to measure the actual indoor concentration rather than relying on the map alone.
If elevated levels are found, seek advice about appropriate remediation and follow-up testing.
Whether your property is in a High Radon Area or not, testing is the best way to understand your actual radon level.
